Are intimate hygiene products worth it? That is the question. From a logistical perspective, we shouldn’t use intimate hygiene products. I’m referring to products such as odour-eliminating vaginal gels, intimate washes, and wipes. But what’s the alternative?
Our late beloved Doctor Sindi once advised us to stop using feminine hygiene products. She mentioned how the vagina naturally cleanses itself. The vagina doesn’t need help unless it asks for it. Oh, and it will tell you when it needs support by smelling like a rotten fish or worse rotten meat. And that’s when you rush to your doctor or the local clinic for answers.
What about the days when you have a menstrual odour?
I’ve used intimate wipes, scented pads, and powders to smell rosy and fresh during my menses. I stopped using them after learning that these products can be more harmful than helpful. Yet, my problem is trying to figure out how to get on with my life during the week of my monthly. How do I regain my power and self-confidence and not resort to these products?
Here’s what’s being recommended…
- The first step is to connect intimately with my vaginal area.
The vaginal area has a vagina and a vulva. Vagina is the inner canal/tube that leads from your uterus (inside of your body) to your vulva. Whereas the vulva is the outer part which houses the clit and labia (out and inner lips) and the pubic area

- Embrace the fact that our vagina can self-cleanse.
- Also, ACCEPT that it comes with a unique scent that can change throughout the month. You can wash the vulva with warm water. This will help prevent the build-up of sweat, menstrual blood, left-over sperm that could accumulate harmful bacteria.
- I should continue wearing breathable cotton underwear.
- Stop leaving my pad for too long! 4 to 6hrs max…Ang.
- Eat healthy and
- Love myself enough to get help. Do my 3 year check-up with my gynaecologist. Or visit a local clinic/pharmacy like Clicks or Dischem for a free Pap smear.
- Most importantly monitor any sudden chances that may pop up for instance back pain, smelly discharges and irregular monthly flow.
To wrap this one up…
Brands such as GynaGuard are here to educate about feminine hygiene. Apart from their marketing efforts, their website does give great advice. You have the choice to use their intimate products. But educate yourself before spending money on them.
So, to GynaGuard or not? That’s the question only you can answer. And that means having a relationship with your body and understanding it.
